t.A.T.u. is a Russian pop music duo consisting of Elena Katina, and Yulia Volkova. The group was formed in 1999 by their former producer, Ivan Shapovalov, until they fired him. The group in their early years are most known for being marketed as a lesbian couple around the world. In December 2003, they admitted on Russian television that it was only a marketing strategy. Since then, they have released a second album, and plan to continue in the music industry.
The t.A.T.u. girls knew each other before joining t.A.T.u., in a child's musical group called Neposedi, where both girls started singing.
